The MTN Group follows a Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) strategy, focussing on the key areas of equity ownership, management, employment equity, skills development, procurement, enterprise development and corporate social investment.
MTN recognises that transformation and BBBEE policies are integral to sustainable business success, and MTN SA’s BBBEE procurement scorecard is directly aligned with both the ICT charter and the codes of good practice as set out by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in terms of the Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment Act.
Furthermore, the company actively maximises service and solution procurement from black-empowered suppliers and encourages entrepreneurship within previously disadvantaged communities through both its policies and social investment initiatives. Thus, by partnering with local BBBEE companies, either through joint ventures or by contracting BBBEE businesses, MTN encourages local industry or promotes enterprise development.
And while MTN SA does not exclude vendors that do not meet the ICT charter's required minimum 35% BBBEE rating, it does assist these companies in improving their BBBEE status, particularly if they are part of a strategic supply chain.
