MTN Launches Affordable 5G Smartphone to Empower South African Consumers with Next-Gen Connectivity
MTN South Africa has announced the launch of its 5G-enabled smartphone dubbed MTN Icon 5G, designed to provide customers with faster, more reliable, and cutting-edge communication on the MTN network, South Africa’s best mobile network. The new device is part of MTN's ongoing commitment to bridge the digital divide and ensure all South Africans have access to the latest mobile technologies.
The MTN Icon 5G is available from R219 pm x 36-momths on Core price plan, inclusive of 1GB anytime data and 50 calling minutes for 36 months.
The device is also available on prepaid, priced at R2 499 cash. New prepaid customers who purchase the MTN Icon 5G will receive a once-off free 21GB anytime data and 3GB YouTube data when they recharge with R50.
“We are excited to bring this affordable 5G smartphone to the South African market,” said Thando Gabela, General Manager: Devices, at MTN South Africa. “This is another significant step in our mission to ensure that all South Africans have access to fast, reliable, and affordable mobile communication, regardless of their economic background. As we transition to 4G and 5G, we are here to support our customers every step of the way.”
As newer, faster networks such as 4G and 5G continue to get momentum, MTN is at the forefront of ensuring that customers across the country are not left behind. The launch of the affordable 5G smartphone is an essential step in MTN’s strategy to make next-generation connectivity available to a broader base of customers, including those who may not have access to high-end devices.
The new 5G smartphone provides an affordable entry point for customers seeking the benefits of 5G technology, including faster data speeds, lower latency, and enhanced user experiences. The smartphone is tailored to meet the needs of South Africans who are ready to migrate from older 2G and 3G networks to 4G and 5G but may not have the budget for high-end devices. By providing an affordable, 5G-enabled device, MTN is enabling customers to future-proof their mobile connectivity without the need for a significant financial investment.
Commenting on the growing demand of 5G devices, Gabela said: “The penetration of 4G and 5G-capable smartphones continues to grow across our customer base. This growing trend is a clear reflection of MTN’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and bringing next-generation connectivity to more people. As we continue to roll out our network advancements, the increased adoption of 4G and 5G devices empowers our customers with faster, more reliable services—unlocking new opportunities for education, business, and personal growth. This is a pivotal step forward in our journey to connect more people, foster innovation, and create a more inclusive digital ecosystem for all."
MTN has consistently been recognized for its network quality and service excellence, winning several prestigious awards, including MyBroadband's Best Mobile Network and umlaut's Best-in-Test awards. “These accolades highlight MTN’s ongoing commitment to delivering an exceptional customer experience, backed by the best network technology in the country,” concludes Gabela.
