SA Developers Shine in 2023 MTN Business App of the Year, Showcasing Resilience, and Innovation
The fierce contest for recognition in the 2023 MTN Business App of the Year awards has demonstrated the resilience and innovative spirit of South Africa’s app developers who have fought through tough economic times, an intensely competitive market and pressure on available skills to present the country with apps that enhance the services offered by some business sectors, says MTN.
In its 12th year, the MTN Business App of the Year awards have showcased the vast talent in coding and development in South Africa. Most importantly, it displays that the entrepreneurial spirit that drives innovation is alive and well, says Kholofelo Magagane, Head of Marketing at MTN Business announcing the winners of the various categories included in the 2023 event.
The overall MTN Business App of the Year winners, and finalists, were announced during a gala event at Level Three in Kramerville on Thursday evening.
“The local economy is facing numerous challenges and has not fully emerged from the uncertainty and hardships created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the decision to embark on a journey of entrepreneurship displays the determination of local app developers who have opted to use their skills to create solutions that provide opportunities to enrich the lives of many and contribute to economic growth,” says Magagane.
He adds, “In entering the MTN Business App of the Year awards, the winners of the various categories had to navigate a challenging environment, innovate, and offer unique value to users. To succeed, they had to create effective and user-friendly applications.”
The task of marketing and commercialising their apps, of which the MTN Business App of the Year plays a significant supporting role, has yet to be completed by many developers, participating in the initiative. Entering the MTN Business App of the Year Awards ensures that developers stand out in the industry, this is also re-enforced by becoming category winners or overall competition winners.
The 2023 winners per category are:
• Best Consumer Solution: Discovery Bank
• Best Enterprise Solution: Medsol Breast AI
• Best Hackathon Solution: Future DX - Thutofy

The overall winner is Kena Health, an app that aims to lower the cost of access to quality private healthcare by giving patients access to a doctor, nurse or mental health professional for only R185 per consult –on-demand with no long waiting times.
“Without exception, this year’s winners have shown how technology can help transform traditional business models, streamline operations, and enhance productivity. By harnessing technology to address critical business and societal challenges, they will inspire others to adapt, evolve, and thrive in a rapidly changing environment, says Magagane.
“We look forward to the success of all our entrants and look forward to MTN Business’ role in bringing future innovative solutions to the attention of the broader business community,” he concludes.
